LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Kentucky State Police trooper was injured Wednesday in a crash on Dixie Highway near West Point.

Trooper Bryan Washer said the three-vehicle crash happened just before 4 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the 15000 block of Dixie Highway, near Kosmosdale. That's north of West Point.

In a news release late Wednesday night, KSP said David Huggins, 33, was driving his Mitsubishi Mirage southbound on Dixie Highway when he collided with a Ford Ranger pickup truck, which was also headed southbound. The truck then spun into the northbound, lanes, KSP said, and hit the cruiser drive by Trooper Lukas Jones.

Huggins sped off, KSP said, headed south toward Radcliff. He was soon located in Vine Grove, though, and arrested. KSP said he's charged with:

  • Two counts of second-degree assault,
  • Leaving the scene of an accident-failure to render aid or assistance
  • DUI first offense aggravated circumstances

Huggins appeared in court on Thursday, where the judge set his bond at $25,000 and ordered him not to drive.

KSP said Jones was transported to Jewish Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the truck was transported by EMS to UofL Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The northbound lanes of Dixie Highway in that area were closed for hours Wednesday as police investigated the crash.
