MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) — Part of the roof of a historic church in Madison collapsed Monday evening as a fire engulfed the building and filled the area with heavy smoke.

Submitted footage shows flames and heavy smoke coming from a fire at Trinity United Methodist Church, located in the heart of downtown.

Aerial footage showed a large fire burning on the roof and more smoke coming from an upper-level window. As of 10 p.m., heavy smoke still covered the downtown Madison area as crews continued working to get the fire under control.

The City of Madison said in a social media post Broadway Street will remain closed between 3rd and Main streets until further notice because of the fire. Access within the closed area will be limited to residents and business owners only.

A detour is in place using West and Mill streets to Vaughn Drive.

A social media post from Sunday’s service shows the church ceiling was under construction. It's unknown at this time how the fire started or whether there are any injuries.

A bridal shop in Madison posted on social media that members of the community helped move hundreds of dresses to another church in case the fire spread further. Analog Coffee & Records also posted that they planned to stay open all night so emergency workers could get whatever they needed.
