LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Thousands of runners laced up their shoes Saturday for the annual Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon.

Runners set off from downtown Louisville near Slugger Field to take part in one of the festival's signature events.

Runners could register for a half marathon of 13.1 miles or a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

Both the half marathon and full marathon made their way past Churchill Downs, in honor of the Derby that is now just one week away.

ā€œIt was great,ā€ runner Samantha Olmsted said. ā€œI almost died at mile 10, but we kept going. Then I had some friends cheer me on at the end, and I was like, ā€˜OK, I’ve got to take off.’ My goal was to go sub-two, and I did it.ā€
