LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun announced Thursday he signed a new law aimed at cutting down classroom distractions by limiting student cell phone use during the school day.
The measure, Senate Enrolled Act 78, requires Indiana schools to enforce a "bell-to-bell” restriction on personal electronic devices, including smartphones, smartwatches and gaming devices.
The law expands existing school policies and requires districts to update rules so students are generally not allowed to use personal devices from the start of the school day until dismissal.
Supporters said the change is designed to help students stay focused in class and reduce disruptions for teachers.
"We’ve made major progress improving education for Hoosier students," Braun said. "This new ‘bell-to-bell’ restriction on cell phone distractions will ensure students are focused on learning."
The law includes exceptions for emergencies, students with individualized education programs or 504 plans and medical needs.
It also directs the Indiana Department of Education to provide model policies and guidance to help schools implement the rules.
Officials said the goal is to strengthen classroom environments while giving schools clearer statewide standards for handling personal devices.
