BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) — Bullitt County Public Schools will implement its own police department in an effort to improve school safety.

BCPS currently has 10 school resource officers across its 22 schools. Officers are provided through agreements with local police departments like Shepherdsville, Mt. Washington, Hillview and the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

Ultimately, Superintendent Jesse Bacon said the district's goal is to have an SRO in every single building.

Along with the officers that currently work in the schools, the district is now creating its own police department. They are hiring a chief of police and two additional SROs who would serve directly under the chief.

"This would tailor to a specific type of officer that's looking for the opportunity to be in schools, build relationships with students and help us make sure that we're keeping our students and community safe," said Bacon.

The superintendent said part of the reason they decided to do this now is local police departments are struggling to find officers.

"It's becoming increasingly harder to find folks that want to be school resource officers, and our local departments are having a hard time filling vacancies for their own purposes as well," Bacon said.

He added that it was a priority in the district's budget this year after having conversations with parents on what's more important to them.

"One of those things that was crystal clear was that they want their students to learn in a safe and conducive environment," he said.

The goal is to build up the department if the funding is available in future budgets. The new police agency comes as all three high schools get weapon detection systems starting next school year.

"We hope that it's just another measure that we are doing in conjunction with our greater community to make sure we're keeping the community safe," said Bacon.
