LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentuckians who need driver's license services next week will need to plan ahead.

Driver licensing offices across the state will temporarily close June 4-5 as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet rolls out a new driver licensing system and online portal designed to reduce wait times and expand online services. Offices are expected to reopen June 8.

The transition is part of the launch of the state's new myDrive portal and the Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, known as KINDL. State officials said the updated system will replace a decades-old platform and allow more services to be completed online.

Once the new system is active, Kentuckians will be able to pre-apply for licenses, permits and IDs, request replacement cards, update addresses, check the status of their licenses and monitor card production online.

Gov. Andy Beshear is encouraging anyone who needs licensing services in early June to make arrangements before the temporary closure. About 55,000 Kentuckians are due to renew their licenses in June.

Following the transition, regional offices will operate with walk-in hours from 8 a.m. to noon through June 18 while employees complete training on the new system. Monthly Saturday office hours will also be suspended in June before resuming in July.

Starting June 8, everyone will need a myDrive account, which will link your driving records and offer new online services to speed up the process for replacing and updating IDs.

Naitore Djigbenou, spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said it's important to get the account created as soon as possible.

"Even if you're not due to renew for a couple of years, going ahead and getting that account taken care of now will save you time later," she said.

In the meantime, Djigbenou is telling Kentuckians to be patient.

"We just ask folks to give us grace as we're adjusting to the new system," she said.
