LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection to a shooting during Bloomington’s Little 500 weekend that injured multiple people on Kirkwood Avenue last month.

According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers were monitoring a large crowd in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue around 12:25 a.m. April 26 when they heard multiple gunshots and saw the crowd begin to scatter. Officers responded and found several injured people.

Investigators reviewed cellphone footage and surveillance video from nearby businesses and determined a fight broke out between two women near Five Guys before the shooting. Police said video showed a man waving a handgun toward the crowd before firing a shot into the sidewalk near the restaurant entrance.

Police later identified the suspect as Lewis James May, 18, of Bloomington, after releasing images to the media April 30. Investigators said multiple people identified May within an hour of the images being released.

Officers located May on May 5 and arrested him without incident after he exited a vehicle at a downtown restaurant, according to police. Investigators also served a search warrant at his residence, where they recovered a Taurus 9mm handgun and a backpack believed to be connected to the incident.

May was booked into the Monroe County Jail on multiple charges, including two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness.

Investigators believe a second shooting happened near Chipotle on Kirkwood Avenue shortly after the shooting near Five Guys. Police said it is unclear whether the two shootings are connected, but both happened within a short time of one another. Authorities said at least two women were injured in the shooting near Five Guys, while at least three women were injured near Chipotle.

Police continue to ask anyone with video or information related to the shooting near Chipotle to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
