LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky officials celebrated the start of a major infrastructure project in northern Kentucky.

Officials gathered Friday to break ground for the start of construction on a new the main portion of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the nation.

A new state-of-the-art cable-stayed companion bridge will be added to the existing bridge, connecting Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio without tolls. It will also transform an 8-mile portion of Interstates 71 and 75.

In addition, new approaches to the companion bridge and connections to the existing bridge will be overhauled in each state.

The project is partially funded by two U.S. Department of Transportation grants for $1.63 billon, some of the largest transportation grants in U.S. history, according a news release.

The Brent Spence Bridge carried 80,000 vehicles per day when it was built in 1963, but that number has since doubled to 160,000 per day, carrying $1 billion in freight daily.

The companion bridge is expected to open in 2031 and most of the approach work should be done by 2033.
