LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new modernized driver licensing system and online portal will launch for Kentuckians in June.
According to a news release, the update will provide online services to help reduce wait times at regional offices and minimize paperwork.
Gov. Andy Beshear said the system will replace the nearly 40-year-old platform and allow people to create accounts through a new portal called "myDrive."
"This new system will provide families with the secure, online services they expect in today’s world," Beshear said in the release.
Keyana Sample's driver's license is expired, and said she needs something "quick and efficient."
"I had to make sure I had a babysitter and make sure I was off work to do this," she said.
Sample planned her day ahead, even visiting a different licensing office than she usually does.
"Not everybody can take the time out of their day to fight the lines," she said.
Hoping to get in and out, but also knowing that it usually takes a while for her to be serviced — at least one to two hours.
Jeremy Slinker, deputy secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said June 8 is the anticipated rollout date for the new system, called the Kentucky Information Network for Driver Licensing, or KINDL. Using it, people will be able to skip the trip to driver licensing regional offices, and get service for most of the things they need online if they qualify.
"We believe it's going to be simpler and faster," Slinker said.
People will be able to pre-apply for a license, permit or ID, request a card replacement, check their current license standing and more.
"For renewals, duplicates, address changes, lost my ID, you'd be able to do that online," said Slinker.
People will also be able to pre-apply for first-time licenses and permits online ahead of time, uploading necessary documents to their MyDrive accounts.
"I do want to make a point that we're still going to have regional office, we'll still have pop-up shops for areas that don't have offices because those of us, and if you heard me I said us, that maybe don't do a lot of things online and who like to talk to someone and like to show people our documents, that service is still going to be available," Slinker said.
Officials said those who need to renew in June are strongly encouraged to visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office before June 4.
All offices will close June 4–5 and hours of operation will be adjusted from June 8–18 to allow for the system migration.
"Team Kentucky remains committed to improving our licensing services so that Kentuckians are spending less time waiting in line and more time getting where they need to go," Beshear said.
According to officials, KYTC will also create a new system to streamline licensing for commercial drivers.
The Information Network for Driver Licensing will launch June 8 and allow medical certificates to be accepted directly from approved providers, rather than manually submitting results to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s National Registry.
After it is launched, the state’s MyCDL portal for commercial drivers will be discontinued.
