LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police said it issued more than 250 citations over the weekend after they added increased police presence to busy areas in the city.
Last month, LMPD announced it would be implementing a Summer Task Force. 27 LMPD officers will now rotate monitoring entertainment and business districts like Waterfront Park, NuLu and the Highlands. They will also be monitoring the areas they see the most crime.
Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said Wednesday the task force had a successful first weekend, issuing 269 citations.
"You want people to have a good time," McKinley said. "But when you are congregating on sidewalks, clogging these sidewalks, drinking alcohol, tailgating on public property, we are going to take action. We are going to make sure people enjoy those places appropriately."
The task force was put in place due to continued issues with large groups at Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge as well as entertainment districts like the Highlands.
At least 13 officers will be working seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.
"LMPD is not sitting idly by and we are going to be very proactive in taking steps to make sure that people feel safe," LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said.
Increased police presence is expected in those busy areas through the rest of the summer.
