LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Dozens of people are expected to lose their jobs after UPS announced the closure of a Louisville facility.
The company said it will close the Bluegrass UPS Facility on Bluegrass Parkway on June 2. The WARN notice said 65 jobs will be impacted. UPS said it will try to offer those employees others positions where possible.
In a written statement Monday, a UPS spokesperson said the company is in the midst of the largest "network reconfiguration" in its history as it aims to create a "nimbler, more efficient" operation.
"Some positions will be affected, though most changes are expected to occur through attrition," spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill said. "We're committed to supporting our people throughout this process. While our building footprint is changing, our record of reliable pickup and delivery is not. We remain committed to providing industry-leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world."
The move is part of an initiative which aims to consolidate older facilities and shift packages to bigger, highly automated hubs.
Officials with Teamsters Local 89, the union that represents workers at the UPS Bluegrass facility, said they're supposed to get more details Tuesday about the closure and who it impacts.
