LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville was selected to host the 2028 U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Team Trials for men's and women's gymnastics.

The trials serve as the final stop for thousands of gymnasts on their journey to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

For two weeks, Louisville will turn into Gymnastics City USA for five of the sport's "most prestigious" events, concluding with the four-day Olympic trials.

"For our athletes, this is a moment they've worked their entire lives for, and in 2028, as the world turns its attention to the Olympic games, a defining moment on that journey will happen right here in Louisville," USA Gymnastics President and CEO Kyle Albrecht said.

The festivities get started June 5, 2028, at the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville with the USA Gymnastics Championships, which features more than 1,500 elite and development athletes in rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, and trampoline and tumbling. The KICC will then host Xcelebration, a national-level event for women's artistic gymnastics in the Xcel program, followed by the USAG National Congress and Trade Show and the USA Gymnastics for All Gymfest.

"When people come to Louisville and see gymnastics, this is the best of the best the U.S. has to offer," gold medalist Shannon Miller told WDRB News. "It is hard to make a U.S. Olympic team than to actually do well at the Olympics because there is so much great competition here."

The elite finals for the USA Gymnastics Championships will be held June 16-19 at the KFC Yum! Center. Fans will watch as athletes from the USA Gymnastics women's and men's National Team compete for a spot on the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team, which will be announced at the end of the competition.

Organizers said Louisville's sporting legacy helped bring the trials to the commonwealth.

"Louisville has been a host to iconic sporting events for more than 150 years. City and state leaders have welcomed our sport, and rallied the community around this opportunity over the last year. We're incredibly excited about coming to Louisville in 2028," Albrecht said.

Gov. Andy Beshear was on hand for Wednesday's announcement, and called it a "major win" for both the city and the state.

"This is an incredible moment for Kentucky as we welcome the nation's best gymnasts to Louisville who are chasing their American Dream and the chance to compete at the 2028 Olympics," Beshear said. "Athletes and their families, along with fans from across the country, will see the hospitality and excitement that have made our state a global sports destination — for horse racing, professional soccer, college basketball and now the Olympic trials."

With the 15-day event taking place downtown, leaders said there will be "additional programing" throughout the city to create an "immersive, citywide experience" for athletes, their families and fans.

Tickets for the trials will go on sale in 2027. Organizers said more than 6,000 participants and more than 200,000 visitors are expected.
