LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Western Kentucky University says it’s making changes to comply with a new state law affecting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

A university spokesperson said all public universities in Kentucky are required to make similar adjustments to follow the law.

The Society of Black Alumni says those changes led the group to cut ties with WKU’s alumni association.

The organization — which supports Black students, alumni, faculty, and staff — said it was told to either dissolve, remove "Black” from its name and mission, or operate independently.

In a post on Instagram, the group said it was “deeply disappointed by the lack of transparency and collaboration" from the university and decided to move forward as an independent nonprofit.

WKU said it is following state law and thanked all of its alumni for their contributions.
