LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new law would give Kentuckians up to $5,000 for installing a storm shelter in their homes.
Senate Bill 11 was signed by Gov. Andy Beshear, creating a new rebate program to protect people during severe weather.
The goal is to expand access to safe shelters, especially in rural areas. Kentuckians who decide to add a storm shelter will be able to apply for the rebate.
Homeowners must be willing to open their storm shelters to the community whenever severe weather happens.
"This particular program kind of targets a smaller group of citizens in a small neighborhood or in an area in a rural part of the state," said Eric Gibson, Kentucky Emergency Management director.
The program is expected to launch in January 2027.
