SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — If you live in Shepherdsville, there's no public pool for those hot summer days coming around the corner. But that'll change in just a few months, when the city's new aquatic center opens after two years of construction.

On Joe B. Hall Avenue, next to Kart Kountry, the $25.5 million center will feature an outdoor pool as well as an indoor pool, along with water slides, a splash park and pickleball courts. Shaded seating and concessions will also be available.

Mayor Jose Cubero said the center will be able to host swim meets and other competitions, drawing visitors from across the reason.

The aquatic center also features six pickleball courts.

"2026 is a transformational year for the city of Shepherdsville," Cubero said Monday. "It's going to do well."

The aquatic center is part of a $40 million project that also includes revitalizing Shepherdsville's parks and streetscapes. The plan includes an updated town square and upgrades to the park like playgrounds, courts and a disc golf course.

Using a $30 million loan from the Kentucky League of Cities, the city bought the land where the center will be built, near the Shepherdsville exit off Interstate 65, from Kart Country in 2023. That loan will be paid back over the course of a 25-year period.

While there's still a lot of work to do, the place is taking shape. The facility will not only serve the people in Shepherdsville but draw from all over the state.

"It is a vision to bring something here that makes our community special," Cubero said Monday. "But it's not just about our community here. It's about the county and the state. This is a regional impact."

The indoor portion of the aquatic center will be ready before the outdoor pool, but the plan is to open the entire facility July 1.
