LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Miracle League of Louisville is left heartbroken after vandals spray-painted its facilities at Fern Creek Park, leaving graffiti on buildings, sidewalks, benches, signs and other property used by athletes with special needs.

The vandalism was discovered Wednesday morning.

"It's more than just innocent fun," said Miracle League of Louisville Director Andrea Witten. "You're damaging stuff that means a lot to the families of our special needs athletes."

Blue spray paint covered much of the Miracle League complex, including signs bearing the organization's name and recognition for donors who helped make the facility possible.

The Miracle League of Louisville is part of a national organization that provides adaptive baseball opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. It operates an accessible sports complex at Fern Creek Park.

"It gives access to athletes that wouldn't have access to play sports if something like this didn't exist," Witten said.

Witten said this is not the first time the park has been targeted. The facility was also vandalized over Memorial Day weekend, though she said the latest incident was far more extensive.

"It's just awful to think somebody would deface property that is here for our special needs athletes around the city," Witten said.

Metro Louisville's Chief Park Ranger is now investigating and reviewing surveillance video from the park.

While cleanup will require time, money and effort, Witten said the vandalism cannot diminish what the Miracle League means to the families it serves.

"Until you see somebody with a disability that wouldn't ordinarily be able to enjoy that sport, you don't know what Miracle League means to those families," Witten said.

The organization is currently in its largest season yet, with 14 teams and 171 athletes participating. A splash pad is also being added to the park.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact police.

People who would like to help with cleanup efforts or contribute toward replacing damaged signs can donate through the Miracle League of Louisville's website.
