LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man shot by Louisville police early Monday morning has died, and a woman who was allegedly shot by that man is in critical condition.
According to Deputy Chief Emily McKinley, officers were called at about 2 a.m. to Ridgecrest Road near Rosette Boulevard on a report of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. Before officers had a chance to help her, McKinley said a man carrying a gun approached them. The officers told him to stop, but he reportedly continued to come toward them and pointed the weapon.
That's when one of the officers shot the man as he continued to approach. Both the man and woman were taken to UofL Health Hospital. LMPD later said the man died at the hospital.
The woman was last reported in critical condition. Her family members were too distraught to speak on camera, but told WDRB her name is Tiffany, and she is a mother of three. They said she was shot during a birthday party for her adult son, and they fear she may not survive.
On Monday afternoon, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the shooter as 20-year-old Frank Mejia Aguilar.
It was another morning marked by violence in Newburg. Janice Littlejohn, who lives in the neighborhood, said "I just wish all this would stop."
She woke up to flashing lights and yellow crime scene tape.
"This area is huge," she said, "and the fact that this is going on and the school is right around the corner there and you have a lot of kids around here."
McKinley said the Public Integrity Unit will investigate, and there is body camera video of the incident, which will be released within 10 business days.
She said that the encounter is an example of the daily dangers Louisville police officers face, and added that the department is grateful no officers or bystanders were injured.
