CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) — An EF1 tornado with 100 mph winds touched down Sunday night in central Clark County, the National Weather Service said.

Late Sunday night, a tornado warning was issued near the area of Otisco, Indiana, which is north of Charlestown along State Road 3. On Monday morning, downed trees and a destroyed shed were left in the wake on properties on Salem Drive near Otisco.

"The pictures don't do it justice," said Ann Murphy, who was helping clean up her brother's property Monday morning.

Murphy avoided the tornado at her home in Charlestown but warned her brother, who lives in the Wyckcliff Farms subdivision near Otisco.

"He said he heard the wind (and) the rain like he'd never heard before," she said. "Then he heard something hit the side of the house, which was the tree in the front falling."

The tree avoided the house but destroyed his shed and caused damage to his pool in the back yard.

Somehow, the high winds didn't seriously damage any homes, according to surveyors.

"Fortunately, we've not located any structures that have been damaged significantly," said Gavan Hebner, director of Clark County Emergency Management. "A lot of tree damage in the area here in Wyckcliff Frams."

The National Weather Service said the tornado was 150 yards wide and was on the ground for 3 miles.

Clark County officials said they're aware of some reports about sirens not activating. Crews are planning to check those for issues soon. Hebner said it's an important reminder to always have more than one way to be alerted.

"We need to have weather radios, we need to enable wireless emergency alerts, subscribe to text alerts, weather apps, news channels and have multiple layers and ways to get alerts," he said.

The storms were widespread across the area Sunday night. In Newburgh, Indiana, near Evansville, the storm left damage in its wake in what Indiana State Police called a "major tornado incident."

Photos from the area show downed trees as well as damaged structures and vehicles.
